- Conor Gallagher Will Have A Limited Role At Chelsea If He Refuses To Join Atletico Madrid Or Sign A New Deal
- Why He Is Better Off At Atletico Madrid
Chelsea and Atletico Madrid have agreed a deal for the transfer of Conor Gallagher. Atletico Madrid have agreed to pay €40 million (plus add-ons) for the English international, but they are yet to reach an agreement with the player, as Gallagher still wants to remain at Chelsea beyond this summer.
The Blues have made it clear to the 24-year-old midfielder that he will have a bit-part role under Enzo Maresca if he stays this season.
The Club believes that Enzo Maresca’s playing style does not suit Conor Gallagher’s strengths. And with his contract ending next June, Chelsea are looking to cash in.
However, the English midfielder is still adamant on staying at the club, and has already rejected a move to Aston Villa this summer..
Although, it is not typical to see English midfielders in La Liga, a move to Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid looks like a perfect fit and a step up for Conor Gallagher at the moment.
Why?
Atletico Madrid is a more settled club/project at the moment than Chelsea. They compete for trophies, and since Simeone took over, they’ve averaged a major trophy every 1.5 years. Also, Gallagher is a midfielder well suited to the counter-attacking style Diego Simeone is known for.
Last season, Gallagher was one of Chelsea’s best players. “He won the most possession (221), created the second most chances (53), created the second most big chances (11), and had the second most assists (7) for Chelsea in the Premier League.”
It is often hard for players to leave their boyhood clubs, especially when they have settled into the first team, but currently, a move to Atletico looks like a step up for Conor Gallagher.
