Going into last season, Real Madrid were considered to be ahead of Barcelona.

Real Madrid had just won the League and Champions League, and in the summer, they brought in a superstar in Kylian Mbappe.

However, Hansi Flick’s Barcelona eclipsed Real Madrid last season, winning La Liga, and also defeated Real Madrid to win the Spanish Super Cup and Copa del Rey.

Real Madrid have strengthened this summer, but if they do not sign these two profiles, Barcelona might just dominate them again this season.

Real Madrid have brought in Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dean Huijsen, Franco Mastantuono, and Alvaro Carreras. They have improved in key positions, but they still need to get two more players to complete their rebuild for the 2025/26 season.

Midfield Controller

PROFILE - Real Madrid, Germany's midfield maestro Toni Kroos decides to bow out after EURO 2024

First off, Real Madrid need a top central midfield controller. Barcelona have Frenkie de Jong and Pedri. Frenkie de Jong and Pedri, two technically gifted midfielders, control the tempo of the game for Barcelona.

Real Madrid have missed this profile since Toni Kroos left the club. Now that Luka Modrić has also left, they need this profile badly.

Their own Rodri or an orchestrator who can help Los Blancos control matches against top sides in midfield and bring their talented forwards into the game.

Ball-Playing LCB

The second profile Real Madrid need is a ball-playing left-footed centre-back. They signed a top ball-playing RCB in Dean Huijsen, but they need a left-footed defender who remains calm under pressure and can play out from the back.

Unlike Antonio Rüdiger, who showed how vulnerable he can be under pressure against PSG last month, Madrid need their own Levi Colwill or someone in the mould of Josko Gvardiol.

With these new profiles, Real Madrid’s squad will have the right balance it takes to truly outplay Barcelona, especially now that they have a coach who enjoys possession in Xabi Alonso.
