In a club statement, Manchester United said:

With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.

United also confirmed that former player Darren Fletcher will take over on an interim basis while the club searches for the best coach to lead them into a new era.

Manchester United appointed Amorim in November 2024 after a poor start to the season under Erik ten Hag.

Since his appointment, the Portuguese manager won only 24 of the 63 matches he oversaw at the club, with just 15 of those victories coming in the Premier League. His 31.9 percent win rate stands as the lowest of any permanent Manchester United manager in the Premier League era.

There are already rumours that Manchester United could be lining up a move for recently sacked Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca. Manchester United also see Unai Emery as an option, although negotiating with Aston Villa will be difficult.
