Aston Villa have parted ways with manager Dean Smith after a run of 5 straight defeats in the Premier League. The club confirmed earlier today that the English manager will no longer be the coach of the team.
Dean Smith was appointed by Villa in October 2018 and he picked Chelsea legend John Terry as his assistant.
Part of the statement by Aston Villa CEO on the club website reads:
After a good start to last season, this year we have not seen the continuous improvement in results, performances and league position which we have all been looking for. For this reason, we have decided to make a change now to allow time for a new head coach to make an impact.
“The Board would like to sincerely thank Dean for his many excellent achievements, on and off the pitch, during this time. Everyone knows how much Aston Villa means to Dean and his family. He has represented the Club with distinction and dignity – universally liked and respected by everybody associated with Aston Villa – our staff, players, and supporters alike. We wish him the very best.”
The process of replacing Dean will now begin and the Club will update supporters in due course.
When he took over at Aston Villa, they were 14th on the Championship table, but he was able to galvanize the team to win promotion to the Premier League.
Aston Villa defeated Frank Lampard’s Derby County in the playoffs final.
The former Brentford manager helped Aston Villa stay in the Premier League in the 2019/20 season. Villa improved very much last season under Dean Smith.
However, this season has been a different story. Villa have lost their last five Premier League matches and that form ultimately cost him his job at Villa Park.
Dean Smith is now the fifth Premier League manager to lose his job this season. He follows Mark Huges, Xisco Munoz, Nuno Espirito Santo, and Daniel Farke. Manchester United’s Ole Gunnar Solksjaer is the favorite to lose his job next.
Aston Villa feel this International break is the perfect time for the club to move in another direction. The club will now be looking for another manager that will help them avoid relegation battle this season.
