Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo has said he would like to feature at the 2024 Euros. We look at the possibility of that happening and how far the legendary Portuguese can go.
After a summer transfer window that started with Cristiano Ronaldo asking to leave and ended with him staying, things have calmed down quite a bit. He finally opened his account for the season last week in Manchester United’s Europa league victory over Sheriff Tiraspol.
He has been on the periphery in the first few weeks of the season, featuring mainly as a substitute. His last appearance was a sign of him reaching full fitness. He was more involved in the play and got a goal to show for it. This week, he joined up with the Portuguese National team for the last set of international fixtures before the World Cup.
In a recent interview the Portuguese said his aim is to feature at Euro 2024 — when he will be 39 years old.
Ronaldo’s Longevity
The Portugal captain has appeared in nine major tournaments for his nation, starting with Euro 2004. He won Euro 2016 with his country and the 2018-19 Nations League.
Now the 37-year-old has looked beyond this winter’s World Cup towards Euro 2024 in Germany. The tournament could be the 20th anniversary of his first major tournament appearance for his country.
He said: “I’m in a national team with a lot of young players with extraordinary futures.
“Obviously, I still want to be a part of it, at the World Cup – and at the Euro as well, I can admit that already. I am happy. I confess that I was missing the feeling of receiving a prize!
“I’m proud to look out and see guys I played with, guys I will continue to play with, ex-players.
“Diogo (Dalot) often jokes with me: ‘Man, you played with everyone; you must be ancient.’”

Ronaldo scored six goals to help Portugal qualify for the World Cup. For a player who has won it all at Club level, the real motivation must be to win the World Cup for his country. Ronaldo is definitely fit enough to extend his career by a few more years but the right circumstances can go a long way to achieving that. Getting back to playing regularly at Manchester United would be a huge boost to his chances. It remains to be seen if CR7 can join the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimović and keep playing till he’s 40.
