There are reports everywhere that Manchester United Football Club are in advanced talks with Ajax boss Erik ten Hag. United were previously interested in Mauricio Pochettino. However, his time at PSG has not impressed the Manchester United board. Ralf Rangnick, who will take up a consultancy role with Manchester United next season, has hinted that the club wants the Dutch coach.
Since Sir Alex Ferguson left, Manchester United have spent so much money while trying to recapture old glory. The club has appointed over 4 managers, but still no luck.
Now that Manchester United are closing in on a coach like Erik Ten Haag, Let’s look at Two structural factors that could make him also fail like the others.
He Could Fail If There Are Unclear Goals/Plans.
Not having clear goals could make it impossible to check the progress a manager/coach is making. At this stage, Manchester United need to rebuild like Liverpool did. They have found a manager who knows how to win in Erik Ten Hag, but there needs to be a rational plan.
For the past managers, it was always between qualifying for the Champions League, winning a trophy or mounting a proper challenge for the EPL title.
Now, that needs to change. Manchester United need to make rational plans seasonally and then measure the performance of the coach based on that. This will help in managing expectations. Erik ten Hag has a certain style.
He will need time and his own players. Unrealistic expectations could derail many things and also frustrate fans.
He Could Also Fail If The Club Are Still Trying To Replicate The “Fergie Era”
Many Manchester United fans still hope that the club will go back to what it was under Alex Ferguson. It won’t happen. Times have changed. There are many teams with so much money to spend, contending for the same trophies as Manchester United.
Ten Hag could fail if there are still people running the club who are trying to replicate the “Fergie Era” He should be allowed to build his own style, create his own legacy, and he should not be compared in any way to Sir Alex Ferguson.
Just like how Pep has completed changed everything at Manchester City, the entire club needs to buy into what Erik Ten Hag will bring. That will bring an identity and a new culture.
Ten Hag is a wonderful manager, but the issues listed above could work against him at the club.
I agree with the facts
Especially the whole Ferguson era
It can’t happen again
Things are different
They just have to move on
The need to allow the manager build the team to what he can work with
A fine observation made by the author of this post
Granted these are solid points raised and if truly Manchester United wants to go back to its glory days it’s must be adhered to, I still think ETH will do amazing things at Manchester United
