Manchester United suffered a devastating 95th-minute defeat to Brighton on Saturday, a feeling all too familiar for the Red Devils.
United initially fell behind to Danny Welbeck’s goal, but Amad Diallo’s equalizer sparked hope. Although Alejandro Garnacho’s apparent winner was ruled out due to offside, a draw seemed a reasonable outcome against a strong Brighton side buoyed by new manager Fabian Hurzeler.
However, Joao Pedro’s stoppage-time header, which found him unmarked at the far post, left United stunned. This heartbreaking loss marked the sixth time since the 2022/23 season that Man Utd have succumbed to a Premier League defeat in stoppage time – a competition high.
This trend is a stark contrast to the first 30 years of the Premier League, where United lost just twice in stoppage time. The defeat also solidifies Brighton’s reputation as Man Utd’s bogey side. They have now won five of the last six Premier League encounters. Manchester United must address this recurring issue to overcome their struggles against the Seagulls and in stoppage time.
It means Brighton have actually won seven of the 15 Premier League games against United. At 47%, it is a higher proportion of games lost against a single opponent than any other United have faced in the Premier League over the past 32 years.
