Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City all dropped points over the weekend to open up the title and top 4 race even more. The Reds bravely earned a 2-2 draw against a stubborn Fulham side after going a man down in the first half on Saturday.
Arsenal could not break down Everton’s tough block and were held to a 0-0 draw at the Emirates. Manchester United condemned Manchester City to their 5th loss in the Premier League this season with two late goals. Chelsea took advantage of rivals dropping points with a rare home win against Brentford at Stamford Bridge on Sunday Night.
Let’s rank the top five players from Premier League Matchweek 16.
Jordan Pickford
Pickford was a big reason Arsenal failed to pick up all 3 points at the Emirates on Saturday. The England number 1 denied Arsenal some big chances and kept the score 0-0 with some spectacular saves at the Emirates. Jordan Pickford made 5 big saves, denying the likes of Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka.
Amad Diallo
Amad pips Alexander Isak to this spot because of the quality of the opponent he faced on Sunday. Manchester City were set to claim another Manchester Derby win on Sunday, before Amad stepped up for Ruben Amorim’s side. The Ivorian won a penalty, before stealing all 3 points with a smart finish right at the death for Manchester United.
James Maddison
Spurs needed a big win to ease the pressure on manager Ange Postecoglou, and that was exactly what Maddison helped Spurs achieve. The former Leicester man orchestrated Spur’s 5-0 win from the middle of the park with his incisive passing and goals.
Maddison created two chances and also scored twice, including a sweet finish from a tight angle late in the first half. Spurs’ 5-0 victory over Southampton cost Russell Martin his job as manager of the Saints; he was sacked soon afterward.
Jacob Murphy
Newcastle needed to start picking more points against sides outside the top 6 and that is exactly what they did at St James Park against Leicester City.
Jacob Murphy was in the thick of things for the Magpies against the Foxes. Murphy created 2 chances in the game and also scored twice in a lethal performance alongside in-form striker Alexander Isak.
Ismaïla Sarr
Crystal Palace claimed their first win over Brighton and Hove Albion since February 2021, thanks to goals from Ismaïla Sarr and Trevoh Chalobah. The Chelsea loanee slashed home Palace’s opener after Will huges’s corner kick delivery came off Ismaïla Sarr.
The Senegalese forward then headed home after a fantastic cross down the left from Tyrick Mitchell. Sarr sealed the result with a confident finish after stealing the ball from sloppy Brighton defenders.
Ismaïla Sarr is the best player for 2024/25 Premier League Matchweek 16.
