Chelsea 2-2 Wolves
Chelsea blew a two goal lead within 20 minutes as Wolves hold The Blues back with a late equalizer
Match Report
Chelsea made three changes from their loss against Everton last week. Thomas Tuchel opted to start Romelu Lukaku, hoping he would help Chelsea be more direct.
The first half started slowly, but Chelsea dominated. After a few half-chances, Timo Werner slotted the ball home, but the goal did not count because of a foul in the buildup.
It wasn’t long before The Blues had the ball in the back of the net again. Ruben Loftus-Cheek tapped home from a corner, but VAR ruled the goal out for offside. The Blues commanded the first half, although Wolves threatened from quick counter-attacks.
Chelsea started the second half with intent and Werner saw his shot saved by Jose Sa after just 20 seconds in.
11 minutes later, Romain Saïss fouled Romelu Lukaku inside the box and the referee gave a penalty after checking replays.
The Belgian slotted in comfortably. Just two minutes later, Lukaku added his second goal after a mistake from Wolves allowed Kovacic to win the ball deep in their half. The Croat released Lukaku, who shot into the bottom right corner to give Chelsea a two-goal lead. The Blues could have added more, but poor decision-making in attack denied them.
After conceding two, Wolves made changes, and those changes gave the team life. Chiquinho and Trincao were impactful when they came on. Barcelona loanee, Trincao lashed onto the ball after Mateo Kovacic was dispossessed. The Portuguese placed the ball in the top right corner to give Wolves a lifeline. After Trincao’s goal, Wolves found momentum, and that carried on till the final minute. Chiquinho placed a fantastic cross to find Conor Coady, who headed past Edouard Mendy for 2-2 in the 96th minute.
Chelsea suffered another blow to their top 4 hopes even as a prospective new owner was watching on. The Blues will hope to improve against Leeds on Wednesday.
