Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo has agreed to a 3-year contract extension at the club. Top clubs around Europe have been monitoring the La Masia graduate. Barcelona moved fast to secure a contact renewal with one of their best defenders so far this season.
Barcelona signed Ronald Araujo in August 2018, from Uruguayan side Boston River for a fee of €1.7 million, plus €3.5 million in variables. Since then Araujo has settled well at the club. He initially played for Barcelona B side, but made his senior debut for Barcelona against Sevilla, a match where he was later sent off for a bad tackle on Chicharito Hernandez.
Ronald Koeman promoted Araujo to the first team. Araujo has made over 50 appearances for the club since then, scoring 6 times. His physicality and no-nonsense style means he is one of the most sought-after young defenders in the world.
Barcelona have inserted a €1B release clause into his contract to ward off any interest in the 23-year-old. The club used the same tactics in the contracts of promising youngsters like Pedri and Ansu Fati. The club will also use that tactic to keep Pablo Gavi at the club. After Araujo’s official signing, which will take place on Friday 29th April, Barça will continue discussions with Gavi over a new long-term deal. The Catalans are protecting players they believe are important to the future of the club.
The only reasonable Defender at Barcelona…boy is on to great heights..
