Williamson has been sidelined since January 2, when he suffered an injury in a loss to the 76ers. He then suffered another setback in his rehab that was expected to keep him out until after the All-Star break. He will be re-evaluated in two weeks after recent medical imaging revealed his hamstring continues to heal, per the Pelicans.

Backstory

Zion Williamson ‘s injury, a huge blow to Pelicans

After coming back from last season’s foot surgery, the 22-year-old Pelicans star was playing some of the best basketball of his career before it all came to a screeching halt on Jan. 2. Williamson suffered a right hamstring strain late in the third quarter of a loss to the 76ers. He came up limping after a fast break and was later ruled out of the game.

The 2019 No. 1 draft pick was leading the Pelicans with an average of 26 points per game before the injury. Williamson was named an All-Star this season, his second time earning the honour. New Orleans is 31-34 on the season and sits in tenth place in the Western Conference.

How can Pelicans cope without Zion

Brandon Ingram and CJ McCollum have to play like stars to give this team a chance. They’ve had some great moments, but the consistency hasn’t been there nearly enough. If Zion’s return becomes more of a realistic possibility, it’ll give everyone around the team some life, but they’ve got to get something going with the guys who are available just to stay alive in the playoff race.
