Chelsea and Arsenal qualified for the quarterfinals of the Carabao Cup by defeating Premier League opponents on Tuesday night- Tossyardkings.
Chelsea Beat Southampton Via Penalty Shootout In the Carabao Cup.
Chelsea faced Southampton at home for the second time this month. Chelsea triumphed in the Premier League 3-1 against the Saints earlier this month. However, The Blues needed a penalty shootout to overcome Southampton on Tuesday evening.
The Blues started as the better side in the first half. Summer signing Saul Niguez almost gave The Blues the lead with a superb header. Saul’s effort was saved by Fraser Forster.
Thomas Tuchel`s side kept knocking on the door till Kai Havertz headed home the opener just a minute before halftime. The German forward headed home from a corner taken by Hakim Ziyech.
Southampton resumed the second half with much intensity and it paid off. The Saints equalized after Kyle Walker-Peters zoomed past Alonso.
The English defender’s shot went through Kepa’s legs and Che Adams had the simple task of putting the ball inside the net.
The Saints should have scored more goals as they pressed Chelsea relentlessly. The Blues found it hard to play out from the back. Chelsea missed the calmness of Jorginho, but fortunately for them, Southampton couldn’t score.
Kepa kept Chelsea in the game late-on with some important saves just before the end of 90 minutes.
The match went straight into penalties and Southampton’s Theo Walcott was the first player to miss. Mason Mount could not capitalize as he also had his penalty saved by Forster.
Southampton’s William Smallbone ballooned his spot-kick over the bar. However, Chelsea’s Reece James scored the winner for the London club.
Arsenal See off Leeds.
In North London, Arsenal also qualified for the quarterfinals thanks to goals from Callum Chambers and Eddie Nketiah.
Sunderland also beat QPR to qualify for the quarterfinals.
