Real Madrid’s 4-3 comeback against AS Roma offered an interesting glimpse into how the Spanish giants could solve some of the balance issue that has affected their star studded squad for almost two years now.

Beyond the result, Jose Mourinho’s decision to substitute Vinicius Junior and introduce more balance into the team showed an alternative approach that could get the best out of Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham and the rest of the attack.

Moving Away From the Left-Wing Congestion

One of Real Madrid’s biggest problems has been the lack of balance in their attack. With Vinicius and Mbappe both preferring to operate from the left, Madrid often struggle to create enough space for their attacking players.

The situation also limits Bellingham’s influence because the Englishman has fewer opportunities to occupy dangerous central positions and link up with the forwards.

Against Roma, two strikers with innate strikers insticnts and positioning scored two goals that leveled the game for Los Blancos

Mourinho’s decision to substitute Vinicius changed that dynamic. Real Madrid became more balanced, created better attacking combinations and eventually completed their comeback against Roma.

Mbappe Needs a Proper Striker

Perhaps the biggest lesson from the comeback is that Real Madrid need to play with a recognised centre-forward.

Carlos Espi could provide the answer. The young striker offers a different profile from Mbappe and Vinicius, with his ability to occupy centre-backs, hold up the ball and bring other attackers into play.

Rather than asking Mbappe to lead the attack from the centre, Madrid should restore him to his preferred left-wing position, where he can use his pace, movement and finishing ability more effectively.

Playing alongside a big, selfless striker like Espi would also give Mbappe more freedom to attack spaces rather than constantly competing for the same positions as Vinicius.

Bellingham Could Become More Influential

A proper striker would also create more room for Bellingham to influence games. With Espi occupying defenders, the English midfielder could make more late runs into the box and operate between the opposition’s midfield and defence.

Ultimately, Real Madrid do not necessarily need another collection of superstar attackers. They need better balance, clearer attacking roles and players who complement each other.

Mourinho’s comeback against Roma offered a reminder that most times, simplicity brings about the best results.
