Chelsea FC ‘s 2022/23 Season Has Been Disastrous
Going into the first full season under Todd Boehly and the Clearlake consortium, Chelsea fans knew it would be far from perfect.
However, no one could have predicted that the club will finish in the bottom-half of the Premier League table and endure their worst season in the Premier League era. Well it has happened, and if the next coming months are not properly managed, Chelsea fans could be set for one of the most depressing eras in the club’s history.
How To Move On From The 2022/23 season.
Planned Clear-out.
Chelsea have the biggest squad in the Premier League. Consisting of too many average players. Players from the academy that have failed to reach their potential and also, signings that have not impressed.
The club needs to structure the clear-out this summer, and it needs to be effective. The likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech, Denis Zakaria, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang and César Azpilicueta, Conor Gallagher are some players that look a level below the expected standard at Chelsea.
Give The Manager The Reigns
There have been quite a few rumours around Chelsea, insinuating that the new owners like to meddle in the Chelsea squad issues a little too much. With Raheem Sterling also stating, the next Chelsea manager must have full control of first team matters for the club to succeed.
Chelsea have reportedly agreed to make Mauricio Pochettino their new manager, but for him to be successful, the owners need to give the former Spurs boss the freedom to implement his ideas fully, on and off the pitch.
Prioritize Squad Harmony Over More Transfers
There have been a lot of complaints by Chelsea fans about their squad, despite the club spending over $600M on new players.
However, if this season has showed anything, it is the fact that the squad needs to gel and players need to understand and play with each other often, in order to build better on-pitch relationships.
This is important in a long-term project like Chelsea’s, as it would prove effective even in the toughest times.
Proper Planning In The Summer Transfer Window.
For Chelsea right now, it shouldn’t be about the number of players they get, but rather the quality of players they bring in. The Blues are blessed with a plethora of talents already.
They just need to add one or two top players in key positions. There is no need to splurge in the summer, just proper squad planning, with Pochettino identifying key targets.
A Settled Pre-Season
If Chelsea are to forget the pains of this season, and start challenging again, they need adequate preparations and planning for the 2023/24 campaign.
Last summer, Thomas Tuchel complained about having to travel a lot, and not getting enough time to train before the season started. Chelsea should avoid repeating the same mistake.
Set High Targets/Standards
Chelsea also have to start aiming high again. The target for next season has to go beyond getting back in the Champions League.
The club has to aim to land a major trophy too. There is also no disadvantage to setting high goals, as it often ensures growth even in disappointment.
While nothing is ever straightforward in football, Chelsea still have one of the best squad in the Premier League. If The Blues Plan their summer activities well, get the right players in and out of the club, and also give Mauricio Pochettino the right authority over his squad, the Argentine manager has what it takes to make Chelsea fans forget the pains of the 2022/23 season, and get the club back up where it belongs.
Priority should be giving Pochettino to oversee the squad without unnecessary interference from the board
