• World No.1 Iga Swiatek beaten in straight sets by Madison Keys

IGA SWIATEK FALLS TO KEYS

After failing to advance to the semis of her last three events, Iga Swiatek got thumped in straights by American Madison Keys, once again denting her preparation for the forthcoming US Open. The World No.1 won her 50th match of the year against Sloane Stephens 6-4, 7-5, having to save 7-break points. Breaking Stephens 6 times, while she got broken 4 times. She faced keys in the round 16 match which she eventually lost in straights. She had to save 4 match points but was far from her very best in a 6-3, 6-4 loss.

Keys did not win a set against the polish No.1 in their 2 previous meeting. However, in the third meeting this year in Cincinnati, she was better and clinical. Her decisions on shot returns and groundstrokes were spot on. She also broke Iga fives times in the entirety of the match.

The victory over Iga Swiatek makes it the first time the American defeats a World No1 in the entirety of her career and she was all about it after the match.

“I obviously had a couple of games with a couple of match points, but I’m just so happy to be able to get the win”. “the last time I played her she beat me pretty badly, so I’m pretty glad to get that one under my belt.
