Barça sporting director Deco has revealed that the Catalans are working on a deal to bring much-coveted Spanish winger Nico Williams to the club this summer. The Blaugranas have started their summer transfers with the signing of Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia, and they will now proceed to try for Nico Williams, who also attracts interest from a host of other European clubs.
Last week, rumours emerged that Nico Williams indicated to Barcelona that he wants a move to the club this summer. Deco confirmed those rumours today: “Yes, Nico Williams wants to come… and we will try!” He added, “Nico, same as other players, is showing a strong desire to come… and if the right conditions are met in his case, we’ll definitely try to complete the deal.”
Barça still face a conservative financial situation, and they need to make room for the Bilbao star’s wages and his release clause, but that situation should not hinder the deal.
However, the Catalans must act quickly as Bayern Munich and Arsenal also follow the situation with Nico Williams closely, and they could pounce if Barça hesitate or fail to agree on a deal with either the club or the player.
Nico Williams wants to remain in Spain and play for a club that challenges for every trophy, and Barcelona represents the perfect place for that. The Spaniard will also have the opportunity to continue to develop alongside another young and exciting Spanish winger in Lamine Yamal.
Nico Williams scored 11 goals and provided 7 assists in all competitions last season, and he would be a valuable long-term addition to Barcelona’s team, as they have struggled to secure a strong left winger since Neymar left the club back in 2017.
