Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana continues to frustrate fans. The former Ajax man keeps making blunder after blunder, and his performance against Lyon in the Europa League on Thursday was another episode fans are eager to forget.

Andre Onana’s late error against Lyon
Nemanja Matić taunted the African goalie before kick-off, calling him “statistically the worst goalkeeper in the history of Manchester United,“ and just minutes into the match against Lyon, the former Chelsea and Manchester United midfielder was proven right. To make things worse, after United fought back to go 2–1 up, Onana parried a last-minute shot onto the path of Rayan Cherki, who equalized for the French giants.
Many United fans have started calling on the club to sell him in the summer, and while that is understandable, the club can still bring out the absolute best from a goalkeeper once rated as one of the best in Europe.
How Manchester United Will Get The Best Out Of Andre Onana
Since he arrived at Old Trafford, Onana has held the number one spot in goal for Manchester United without real competition — but United must change that if they want to get the best out of their £50m signing.
Manchester United signed André Onana from Inter Milan after he had a spectacular season with the Italian club, helping them reach the Champions League final in the 2022/23 season.

Onana did not have a free ride at Inter Milan. Samir Handanović provided immense competition for the Cameroonian goalkeeper, and that brought the best out of him. Handanović played over 14 league games that season, keeping five clean sheets. For the first eight league matches of that season, André Onana was on the bench and could only get minutes in the UCL.
As fans also know second-choice goalkeeper Altay Bayındır to be error-prone and unreliable, Manchester United need to provide top-level competition for the goalkeeper position.
United can get the absolute best out of Onana if they get rid of their second-choice goalkeeper and bring in a top-level goalkeeper who will challenge Onana for the number one spot at Old Trafford. It is a method that worked wonders for Simone Inzaghi at Inter Milan, and Manchester United can learn from that.
