Liverpool win their record 9th League Cup title against Chelsea tonight. The Reds found it hard to break down a very resolute Chelsea side, but an unfortunate outing for Kepa Arrizabalaga helped them overcome the European Champions in Wembley

Match Summary


Chelsea started well against Liverpool tonight. For the first 10 minutes, Chelsea were impressive and they should have had a goal inside the first 10 minutes.

Azpilicueta squared a ball to Pulisic who fired straight at the Liverpool goalkeeper. Liverpool grew into the game and Mane almost gave the reds the lead. Edouard Mendy saved a shot from Naby Keita, before making a remarkable rebound shot from Sadio Mane.

Chelsea created one final chance before the end of the first half, but Mason Mount could not convert.

The Second half provided even more entertainment. Mason Mount was played in superbly by Christian Pulisic, but the Chelsea academy graduate could only hit the inside of the bar. Liverpool thought they scored when Matip headed in from close range in the 67th minute.

However, VAR ruled the goal out for offside. Chelsea also scored twice, but both goals were ruled out for offsides.

Kepa was brought on late in the extra time, to help out with the penalty shootout. However, it wasn’t to be for Chelsea as Kepa was the one who missed the crucial penalty that decided the game.

Liverpool, Worthy Champions

Chelsea have now lost four Finals in a row at Wembley. The Blues will have to wait a bit more to get their hands on domestic trophies since the 2017/18 season.
