- Erling Haaland Scored Twice As Manchester City Win On Opening Day
Manchester City beat Burnley at Turf Moor 3-0 to kick-start their title defence for the 2023/24 Premier League season.
It was straight into action for City as they took the lead just 4 minutes in. In what looked like a goal from last season, Erling Haaland tapped in after City recycled the ball from a corner kick. Manchester City were quick out of the box, but Burnley were not going to be push-overs.
The Clarets started getting a feel for the game, and the departure of Kevin de Bruyne helped with that. However, it only took a brilliant play down the right-hand side of attack for City to double the lead.
Good work from Kyle Walker who found Alvarez in the box, the Argentine teed up his striking partner Erling Haaland who was quick to smash City into a comfortable 2-goal lead.
Haaland became only the second player to score twice on the opening day of the Premier League in consecutive season, the other being Chelsea’s Didier Drogba.
Vincent Kompany’s men were entertaining, as they stood their ground to continue playing progressive football – The Clarets just lacked the needed quality to hurt Manchester City.
Rodri added the third with a quick finish inside the box to seal the result, before Burnley were reduced to 10 men late on in the game. It was an entertaining season opening, and for Manchester City, 3 vital points to start their title defence.
