Senegal are among the favorites for this year’s AFCON trophy. The Teranga Lions came into their first group match today against Zimbabwe as clear favorites to win.

Sadio Mane scored the winner for Senegal as they open their campaign with a very important victory. It was hearthreak for Zimbabwean fans though as they had to watch their side concede a goal at the last minute.

Match Summary


Zimbabwe almost caused an upset today, but Mane made sure that didn’t happen. Although Senegal were missing some key players due to COVID, they still had a better team than Zimbabwe. Senegal dominated that match and Sadio Mane wiggled through the defense only to fire straight at the Goalkeeper Petros Mhari in the 24th minute.

Captain Idrissa Gueye should have scored for Senegal seven minutes before halftime but he mis-controlled the ball, and he couldn’t convert. PSG’s Diallo also came close with a header late in the second half, but he also could not score.

Kelvin Madzongwe blocked a shot with his hands inside the box, and the referee awarded a penalty to Senegal very late in the game. A high pressure situation required experience and Sadio Mane stepped up to snatch three points right at the death.

It was a very dramatic finish to the match. Senegalese fans were happy, but it was just pure heartbreak for Zimbabwe.
