José Mourinho has been officially unveiled as Benfica’s new head coach, making a sensational return to the club where his historic career began 25 years ago.
The announcement was made today, Thursday, just two days after the Portuguese giants sacked their previous manager, Bruno Lage, following a shock Champions League defeat.

Jose Mourinho: A New Chapter, Not a Celebration
Speaking at his official presentation, a visibly emotional Mourinho made it clear that he is not at Benfica to reflect on his storied past.
“It’s been 25 years, but I haven’t come here to celebrate my career,” the 62-year-old stated. He pledged his full commitment to the club, telling President Rui Costa, “My promise is very clear: I will live for Benfica, for my mission.”

The appointment marks a dramatic turn of events, as Mourinho was only recently sacked by Fenerbahçe after being eliminated from the Champions League by Benfica in the qualifiers.
The contract, which runs until the end of the 2026/27 season, includes a clause allowing either party to end the deal at the end of the current campaign.
This is seen as a way for both the manager and the club to assess their long-term fit after a challenging period for both parties.
Mourinho will be motivated to bring glory to Benfica, and coaching in his homeland, and in the UEFA Champions League, should stoke the flames in the belly of the self-proclaimed ‘Special One’.
