- The Magpies are reportedly interested in signing last season’s Golden Glove Winner or Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale
Newcastle United are ready to negotiate with former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea after Nick Pope’s injury. The former Burnley goalkeeper suffered a shoulder injury in Newcastle United’s 1-0 win over Manchester United on Saturday. Pope will be out for 5 months and likely for the remainder of the 2023/24 campaign.
Eddie Howe on Pope’s injury : “It will be a massive blow for us if he is ruled out for any length of time. It looked really innocuous, but that is usually the way, and they are normally the more serious ones. You could see he was in distress, and it looked like he dislocated his shoulder just diving.”
David de Gea has been a free agent since his deal controversially ended with Manchester United last summer.
The Spaniard could be set for a short spell on Tyneside to help out Eddie Howe’s men.
Pope has been so important to Newcastle’s rise in the league in recent times, and he has started this season well too.
Newcastle number 1 is joint top for most clean sheets this season, and also third in Premier League saves percentage (74.1%).
The Toons are also looking at the possibility of loaning Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale in January.
Ramsdale has recently lost his starting spot to David Raya at Arsenal, and he could be a top class replacement for Pope in January.
David de Gea will be readily available for free, and Newcastle will be getting a world-class shot stopper. The only concern might be about De Gea’s match sharpness, given he has not played a professional game this season.
