• Benzema and Asensio score as Real close in on semi-final spot

Real Madrid showed hunger and proper class as they beat Chelsea to set themselves up for another UEFA Champions League Semi-final spot with a 2-0 win at the Bernabéu.

Report

Real Madrid defeated Chelsea 2-0 in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final at the Santiago Bernabéu. Karim Benzema opened the scoring in the 21st minute with a simple tap-in from a Kepa save.

Chelsea’s hopes of a comeback were dashed when Ben Chilwell was sent off for a professional foul on Rodrygo in the 59th minute.

Marco Asensio doubled Real’s lead in the 74th minute with a low shot that beat Kepa Arrizabalaga. Chelsea had a late chance to score. Mason Mount was denied by a superb block from former team-mate Antonio Rüdiger. The result puts Real Madrid in a strong position to reach the semi-finals. Chelsea will need to score at least twice in the second leg at Stamford Bridge to keep their season alive.

Chelsea’s season almost over after UCL defeat

The Champions League was the only hope Chelsea had of appearing in next season’s competition. However, with this result, that hope is almost gone. That leaves Chelsea with one of their worst campaigns in over 30 years despite spending over 600million. Todd Boehly called for faith and patience as Chelsea navigate through the rest of this season, but he and his staffs have it all to figure out as they restructure the club.
