Sevilla won the 2023 Europa League final on penalties after the match was tied 1-1 in regular time. The Spanish side converted all four of their penalties, while Roma missed two of theirs.
The match was a close affair throughout, with both teams creating chances.
Roma took the lead in the 35th minute through Paolo Dybala, but Sevilla equalized in the 55th minute through a Gianluca Mancini own goal.
Neither team was able to find a winning goal in regular time, so the match went to extra time. The extra period was also scoreless, so the winner was decided by penalties.
Sevilla all converted their penalties, with Ivan Rakitic, Gonzalo Montiel, Eric Lamela, and Lucas Ocampos all scoring. Roma missed two of their penalties, with Mancicni and Ibanez both failing to convert.
This is José Mourinho’s first loss in a major European Final in his long and illustrious managerial career.
The win is Sevilla’s 7th Europa League title, and their first since 2020, extending their record as the most successful team in the history of the competition.
