Manchester United finally appear to be rediscovering a sense of stability under Michael Carrick, and with it, the first real signs of a return to sustained relevance.
After years of turbulence, Carrick’s appointment has brought a calmer, more coherent atmosphere to the dressing room. Taking charge in difficult circumstances following Ruben Amorim’s departure, the former midfielder delivered an impressive run of 12 wins and three draws in 17 games last season.
It was not always spectacular football, but it was effective enough to earn him the permanent job and restore belief around Old Trafford.
This summer’s business has been measured rather than extravagant, yet targeted. The arrivals of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans have significantly strengthened a midfield that had long been a weak point.
A new left-back is expected before the window closes, and there remains scope for one more experienced centre-back. Marcus Rashford’s future is still uncertain after his Barcelona loan, but his presence could yet add dynamism on the left flank.
While this is not yet a title-winning squad in the mould of Sir Alex Ferguson’s great sides, it is one that should comfortably challenge for Champions League qualification. The real test will come when the fixture list intensifies and the pressure returns. Carrick must prove he can handle the demands of two games a week across a full campaign.

If Carrick can maintain the progress shown so far, Manchester United may once again become a club that expects to compete at the highest level rather than merely hope for it.
