Manchester United Still Need To Fix Their Midfield For Them To Challenge This Season
After a horrendous 2024/25 campaign, Manchester United have begun rebuilding their squad for the new season. The Red Devils have already secured the signings of Diego Leon, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha from Cerro Porteño, Brentford, and Wolves respectively.

While these additions mostly strengthen the team’s attack, United still haven’t addressed their most pressing issue — the lack of technical midfielders and effective ball carriers.
A glance at the Premier League’s top sides from last season shows a clear trend: elite teams rely heavily on technically gifted midfielders who can progress the ball under pressure. Unfortunately, United’s midfield remains behind in this aspect.
Aside from Bruno Fernandes, who is a creative and technical fort for Manchester United in the attacking part of midfield, Manchester United lack truly gifted, energetic ball carriers and passers.
Casemiro, Manuel Ugarte, Bruno Fernandes, and Mason Mount make up their current core. While Bruno and Mount thrive in attacking zones, United lack a reliable midfielder at the base who can resist intense pressing and build play from deep.

Ugarte is an excellent ball-winner, but PSG moved him on because he didn’t fit the technical demands of Luis Enrique’s system. Similarly, Casemiro’s influence continues to decline as age catches up with him.
Manchester United need their own version of Moisés Caicedo, Rodri, Martin Zubimendi, or even Ryan Gravenberch. They need players who blend defensive work with composure and creativity on the ball.
If United enter the new season with the same midfield issues — despite an improved attack — Ruben Amorim’s rebuild may be undermined before it truly begins.
