Barcelona are out of the Champions League this season once again after Atletico Madrid defeated the Spanish champions 3–2 on aggregate despite losing 2–1 on the night. Barcelona looked to stage another remontada against Atletico Madrid after their Spanish rivals defeated them 2–0 in the first leg of their UCL tie, with Barcelona going down to 10 men at the Spotify Camp Nou.

Barcelona players talked a big game about how they believed they could come back, and in the opening minutes of the second leg, they matched those words with precise action.

Just two minutes into the game, Lamine Yamal pounced on a mistake by Diego Simeone’s side to halve the deficit. Yamal was ready, and he looked sharp on the night, ready to inspire his side to a brilliant comeback. Hansi Flick’s side did not wait too long before they found their second goal of the night.

Ferran Torres received a beautiful pass from Dani Olmo through the middle of Atletico Madrid’s defence, and he placed the ball to perfection to give Barcelona a 2 goal lead inside 24 minutes and level the score on aggregate.

Barcelona could have made it 3–0 straight after their second goal when Lamine Yamal’s trivela cross found Fermin Lopez, who attempted a diving header but had his attempt smothered by Musso.

Six minutes later, Ademola Lookman put Atletico Madrid back in the lead in a brilliant counter-attacking move that caught Barcelona’s high line out.

A brilliant play between Griezmann and Llorente freed up the Spanish midfielder to put in a brilliant cross for Ademola Lookman to tap home.

Barcelona thought they had equalized on aggregate again after Ferran Torres scored in the second half, but the referee ruled the goal offside.

With 16 minutes left to play, Barcelona repeated the mistake they made in the first leg. Eric Garcia pulled on Alexander Sorloth when the Norwegian was through on goal, and the referee sent him off.

From then on, Hansi Flick’s men could only fashion half chances, as they suffered another elimination caused mainly by defensive errors, just like last season.
