Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has claimed to be the target of threats and extortion attempts from an organised gang.

The Juventus player issued a statement through his lawyers on Sunday, saying the matter had been reported to the authorities. French news agency AFP reported on Sunday that French police had opened an investigation into the case citing a source close to the case. Numerous reports claim that Pogba had kept the matter private despite a difficult time. One in which he was burgled and suffered the loss of his late former agent Mino Raiola.

Pogba’s brother Mathias had posted a video online on Saturday night promising to reveal “explosive” revelations about the player. He claimed the “whole world, as well as my brother’s fans, and even more so the French team and Juventus, my brother’s team-mates and his sponsors deserve to know certain things”.

He went further in saying that “It will be left for the public to decide, in full knowledge of the facts, if he really deserves the admiration, respect and love”. “There will be many elements and testimonies to confirm my words. All of this is likely to be explosive and make a lot of noise.”

A subsequent statement released on behalf of the World Cup winner read:

“Unfortunately, Mathias Pogba’s recent social media posts are not a surprise and follow other attempts over a prolonged period to seek to extort Paul Pogba.”

“The facts have been reported to Italian and French police a month ago and there will be no further comments on current investigations.”
