- PSG a star forward Kylian Mbappé is the new captain of the France men’s national team at just 24.
Mbappé, who helped France to the World Cup final in Qatar last year, will succeed goalkeeper Hugo Lloris as Didier Deschamps’ side start a new qualifying campaign for Euro 2024.
Deschamps confirmed Mbappé’s new role in an interview with French TV station Telefoot and said that the 24-year-old “met all the requirements”.
“Kylian Mbappé is the new captain of Les Bleus. Deschamps also confirmed that Antoine Griezmann is the vice-captain.
“Kylian meets all the requirements to have this responsibility. On the field as in the life of the group, by also being a unifying element.”
Mbappé had been tipped to take the armband after Lloris retired from international football in January.
Mbappé has won 66 caps for his country and played a key role in their successful 2018 World Cup campaign, as well as their run to a second straight final in 2022.
The PSG forward scored a hat-trick in an epic showdown with Argentina and subsequently won the Golden Boot, but his club team-mate Lionel Messi prevailed as the South American nation won 4-2 on penalties.
