Tottenham have contacted Newcastle to start talks for a possible transfer of their target, Sandro Tonali. The North London side want to sign the Italian and bring him in as the face of their new project, and they intend to beat Manchester City to his signature.

Manager Roberto De Zerbi insists on the 26-year-old Italian as a new marquee signing for his midfield as Tottenham plot a rebuild that will take them back to the top of the table after two seasons of languishing around the relegation zone.

Tonali wants to explore a move away from Tyneside this summer, and although some sources have claimed the Italian will favour a side playing in the Champions League, he could also feel tempted by Tottenham’s big offer to become the face of a major new project at the club.

Newcastle signed Tonali from AC Milan back in 2023 for £60 million, and three years later, the Magpies might look to recoup close to £90 million for the Italian.

Manchester City have Tonali as a back-up plan if they fail to land Elliot Anderson, but Tonali remains Spurs’ main target. City are trying to agree personal terms with Tonali, while Spurs have gone directly to contact Newcastle, according to The Athletic.

If Manchester City deem Elliot Anderson’s asking price too high, a bidding war could start between the Citizens and Spurs.
