Liverpool claimed a 3-2 win at the Wanda Metropolitano on Tuesday, but Atletico Madrid did some damage.
Atletico Madrid deserves more credit for their performance yesterday against a strong Liverpool side. The Reds raced to a two-goal lead under 13 minutes in the first half.
After goals from James Milner and Naby Keita, Atletico exposed Liverpool as Griezmann got a brace. The first-half comeback started when Thomas Lemar created a chance out of nothing.
The French forward breezed past Naby Keita to create the first goal. Lemar found Koke just outside the box and the Spanish midfielder’s low shot was tapped in by Griezmann.
The second goal showed how the Liverpool defense can be cut open with fast attacking play inside the box. Joao Felix’s run ended with a pass to Griezmann who turned Matip inward before slotting the ball past Alisson.
The precision of Atletico’s attack shocked the Liverpool defense. Many will argue that Atletico shouldn’t have lost last night. It took a stupid challenge from Hermoso to hand the Merseyside club the winner.
Atletico lost, but many of their fans will be happy with the way the team responded after going two goals down.
