World Cup Golden Boot Race: Can Mbappe and Haaland Catch Messi?

The 2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot race is shaping up to be one of the most compelling in tournament history, with Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Erling Haaland locked in a three-way battle for the top scorer honour.

As of June 24, Messi leads the standings with five goals, having netted a hat-trick in Argentina’s opener against Algeria before adding a brace in their 2-0 win over Austria.

The 39-year-old is not only chasing a second Golden Boot but has become the outright all-time leading scorer in World Cup history with 18 goals, breaking Miroslav Klose’s long-standing record in the process.

Hot on his heels are Mbappe and Haaland, both on four goals. The France captain scored a brace against Iraq, taking his career World Cup tally to 16, as Les Bleus secured their place in the knockout round.

Haaland, meanwhile, has been relentless for Norway, scoring twice in each of their first two matches, including a crucial brace in a 3-2 thriller against Senegal.

With the group stage nearing its conclusion and knockout football approaching fast, the race remains wide open. Messi’s experience and genius give him the edge, but Mbappe’s explosive pace and Haaland’s clinical finishing make both men serious threats to overtake the Argentine before the tournament is out.
