Real Madrid are close to signing Benfica’s Álvaro Carreras, a young Spanish left-back who left Manchester United last summer.

Real Madrid are closing in on the signing of 22-year-old left-back Álvaro Carreras. Xabi Alonso is a big fan of the Spanish full-back, and Real Madrid expect to close the deal after they return from the FIFA Club World Cup.
Álvaro Carreras signed for Benfica from Manchester United last summer, and many thought the English club would use their buy-back clause to bring the Spaniard back in January. Instead, Ruben Amorim chose to sign Patrick Dorgu from Lecce.
Carreras plays as a tough-tackling, smart left-back who feels comfortable attacking spaces in the final third and has the technical ability to invert into midfield. He performed brilliantly for Benfica last season. He played 50 times for the Portuguese side, scoring 3 goals and providing 5 assists.

Other top European clubs tried to make a move for the Spanish defender, but he set his heart on a return to Real Madrid, a club he joined in 2017 as a youth prodigy and left in 2020 to pursue more first-team opportunities.
Real Madrid have identified Álvaro Carreras as a market opportunity and a player who can stay at the club for the next decade, forming a part of the new spine Real Madrid are building in defence.
